Nature reserves near Falun

Falun Municipality includes parts of 40 nature reserves. Lake islands, old spruce forest and pine woodland with centuries-old trees all lie within easy reach of the city.

Woodland islands in Lake Runn

The protected landscape closest to Falun reaches from the Roxnäs headland into Lake Runn, where Runns norra öar includes about ten islands. Pine woodland covers much of the reserve, but past land use is still visible. Deciduous trees have reclaimed former fields on parts of Hellmansö, while exceptionally old pines survive along other shores.

Water gives this reserve a different rhythm from the forests on the mainland. Shores, wooded islands and former open ground occur close together, creating varied conditions for birds and other wildlife. Sanders gammelskog and Rottnebyskogen instead reveal how two contrasting forest types develop over long periods.

Old spruce and mature pine

Sanders gammelskog is largely an old spruce forest that has avoided modern forestry for many years. Moss-covered ground, decaying wood and trees of different ages provide the continuity needed by woodland fungi, birds and other species associated with mature forest.

Rottnebyskogen is defined more strongly by pine. Some trees are over two centuries old, and both standing and fallen dead wood remain part of the habitat. Former fields in the south are gradually becoming meadow. Together, the three reserves offer a clear progression from lake islands and deciduous regrowth to old spruce and long-lived pine woodland close to Falun.
