Nature reserves near Stockholm

Stockholm Municipality includes parts of 19 nature reserves. Three nearby areas offer distinct settings: the woodland and waters of Nackareservatet, Judarskogen’s lake and moraine landscape, and Flaten’s rocky ground, groves and wetlands.

Woodland and water close to the city

Nackareservatet in Stockholm is one of two reserve sections divided between Stockholm and Nacka municipalities. Its Stockholm section combines woodland, lakes and streams with old oaks near Sickla and a southern valley of small watercourses, oak slopes and hazel groves.

Judarskogen surrounds Lake Judarn in western Stockholm. Spruce, pine and rocky pine woodland meet open grassland and damp deciduous forest. De Geer moraines give the area particular geological value, while the former lake outlet provides breeding habitat for great crested newts.

Rocky ground, groves and former farmland

Flaten is a large protected landscape around the lake, marked by pronounced changes in elevation. Broad rocky outcrops give way to hollows with herb-rich groves and small wetlands, while mixed woodland and open farmland add further contrast.

At the northern end of the lake, veteran oaks, pasture and traces of an older park landscape remain. Together, the three reserves show how lakes, woodland, geology and earlier land use shape nature within reach of central Stockholm.
