A lake, a forested hill and a coastal island

The protected areas around Sundsvall span several distinct settings. Close to the city are waterside wetlands, woodland on a prominent hill and an island where deciduous forest has reclaimed a former industrial landscape.

At Sidsjö, the western shore meets farmland while the eastern side gives way to forest. Wet woodland and small mires occupy the reserve’s south-east, with its largest wetland around the lake inlet.

Two contrasting forests

Pine dominates Norra Stadsberget. Old pines and fire scars remain on exposed rock, while near-natural spruce woodland grows in scree slopes and hollows. Oak, elm, ash, lime and maple occur on the warmer south-facing slope.

Klampenborg is an island of dense deciduous woodland. Birch, rowan, goat willow and alder are the main trees, with maple and elm also common. Grey alder fringes the shore, and planted trees survive from the island’s former park.
