Nature reserves near Uppsala

Uppsala Municipality includes parts of 59 nature reserves. Stadsskogen, Årike Fyris and Hågadalen-Nåsten all lie within roughly six kilometres of the centre in a straight line, yet present three distinct landscapes.

Woodland, river and open ground

Stadsskogen lies almost in the city and contains many pines aged 150 to 200 years. Open pine stands alternate with denser patches, dead wood and deciduous trees including birch, rowan and aspen. Small groves of ash, maple and beech add further variety.

Årike Fyris follows the River Fyris south through an open landscape. The river, shore meadows, pasture and environments along the Uppsala esker form a connected corridor of water and grassland.

From valley to deep forest

Hågadalen-Nåsten joins Hågadalen’s open cultural landscape to the extensive forests of Nåsten. Fields, pasture and the valley sit close to continuous woodland and rocky ground, making the contrast between managed land and forest particularly clear.

Together, the three reserves show how nature close to Uppsala shifts from old pines and deciduous trees to river habitats, shore meadows, farmland and deeper woodland.
