Stockholm County

Stockholm County’s national parks and nature reserves

Stockholm County has 379 nature reserves and three national parks: Tyresta, Nämdöskärgården and Ängsö. Old-growth forest, rift valleys, Baltic islands, marine seabeds and traditional farmland give its protected landscapes unusual range.

From rift valleys to the Baltic Sea

The county shifts quickly between rock, forest, lakes and open sea. At Tyresta, old woodland follows a terrain of rocky ridges and cleft valleys. Ancient pines and tall spruces stand around lakes and wetlands, while burned forest records another process shaping the landscape.

Farther east, the same fractured bedrock continues into the archipelago. Nämdöskärgården contains roughly a thousand islands, islets and skerries in a marine landscape where shallow bays, deeper seabeds and varying exposure create contrasting habitats above and below the Baltic surface.

Landscapes shaped by continued use

Ängsö shows a different side of the county. Generations of management have maintained hay meadows, grazed pasture and deciduous groves in the Roslagen archipelago. These open areas meet old coniferous woodland and sheltered sea inlets on a remarkably varied small island.

Forest dominates Bogesundslandet, broken by lakes, small wetlands, fields and pasture. Many ancient oaks grow in both woodland and grazed ground. Together, the four places connect old forest and open sea with landscapes shaped through long interaction between people and nature.

Four places reveal the county’s range

Tyresta contains the clearest concentration of old-growth forest, rift valleys, lakes, exposed rock and fire-shaped woodland. Nämdöskärgården shifts the focus offshore: almost all of the protected area is sea, surrounding a wide scatter of islands and skerries.

Ängsö preserves flower-rich meadows and pastures within an older archipelago farming landscape. Bogesundslandet adds a large continuous forest area with wetlands, lakes and ecological values centred on veteran oaks.

Nämdöskärgården protects a Baltic marine landscape, Ängsö preserves traditional archipelago farmland, and Bogesundslandet combines extensive forest with wetlands, lakes and ancient oaks.
